The Benefits of Working with Millennials
Figure 1. Generational Perspectives (Becton, 2014)
In today’s society, people have very strong opinions towards the millennial generation. Coworkers either love working with millennials or they dread working with them. One of the major benefits of the millennial generation is their perspective on life. They have a hopeful outlook on most opportunities, an ambitious work ethic, a polite view of authority, and they develop loyal relationships (Figure 1). They tend to be easy to work with because they are respectful of older generations and they have a strong desire to learn from them.
Most older coworkers will say people from the millennial generation are constantly on their phones, they only care about social media, they have the wrong values, and they were raised completely different than they were. Many studies have shown that all the problems the older generations see with millennials are why this young generation is becoming so successful (Arellano, 2015). This generation can “shake up the workplace” because they bring a new sense of creativity and experience to the business world (Alsop, 2011). They are always evaluating what is going on around them and thinking of ways they can contribute to make it even better. They enjoy working in groups because it allows ideas to be bounced back and forth between people. The more ideas floating around, the greater the innovations will be.
Millennials are consistently working towards achieving a goal. They are polite when working with others and they take the time to listen to what others have to say. Many millennials work in companies where the other employees are older and have more experience in the specific field of work. They understand these employees are great resources to learn more about the industry. However, they also have a different way of thinking, so they can take what they learn and expand on it in ways the company has not yet done. Together, the mix of generations will be able to use what worked for the company in the past and new ideas from the millennials to advance the company in a positive, successful way (Jerome, 2014).
